IROON, Cyprus — Justice Minister Ionas Nicolaou on Friday ordered an investigation into the conduct of a prison guard who allegedly abused his authority by making inmates print flyers for his daughter’s private institute for free, according to deputy prison chief Eleni Vatyliotou.

The accusations were laid out by daily Politis, which highlighted a number of issues currently plaguing the Nicosia Central Prisons.

“I was called to the minister’s office in regards to this case. We talked on the subject and he decided that the best course of action was a full investigation to determine whether the accusations are true,” said Vatyliotou.

According to Politis, the prison guard – who is reported to be an officer – ordered the inmates who are employed at the Central Prison’s printing department to print and bind a large number of promotional flyers for his daughter’s private institute.

The prison guard in question is also reportedly goes to work in a pick-up truck laden with fruit and vegetables, which he sells in an area near the prison compound.

Politis claimed that the man flaunted his actions, claiming he was a DISY member and that “he couldn’t be touched”.
