SCHLESWIG, Germany — A German district court ruled Friday that height restrictions that kept a 1.58-metre-tall woman from getting a job as a correctional officer could not be justified.
The woman, an attorney, had applied for a job as a correctional officer but was told that she was not tall enough for the position because of federal guidelines that stated men have to be 1.65 metres tall and women 1.63 metres.
But the court in the northern German city of Schleswig said those guidelines were discriminatory and awarded the woman 3,800 euros (4, 137 dollars). It also questioned the legality of separate height standards for men and women.
The case can still be appealed by the government.
