MADURAI, India — The state government has decided to provide martial arts training to prison staff in a bid to prevent untoward incidents inside the prison.
The training in Krav Maga, an unarmed Israeli combat method, was launched in the state with a pilot training session at the Madurai central prison on Sunday. The training to prison staff involves self-defence techniques to tackle armed and unarmed attacks in non-lethal manner.
“The state government has entrusted me with the task of training five personnel from each of the 14 prisons in the state. The five will be selected based on their physical and mental ability,” said S Sreeram, instructor from Krav Maga India, a self-defence training centre in Chennai.
The chosen prison personnel would be invited to Chennai where they would be provided a 30-hour training course over a period of five days. “Krav Maga is a combination of different martial arts. It enables a person to tackle a single attacker or multiple attackers even if they possess weapons,” Sreeram said.
