Tier Talk: How important is continuing education for COs?

Today on Tier Talk, Anthony Gangi sits down with Robert Stallworth and Anthony Mangeri and discusses the importance of continued education. Remember we work in a world where education is given freely to the inmate population, therefore correctional professional needs to keep pace with those they supervise.

Rob Stallworth served 19 years in corrections, mainly as a member of the Virginia Department of Corrections. He rose through the ranks starting as a surveillance officer with the intensive supervision team in Fairfax County, Virginia. In 1996, Rob was sworn in as a probation and parole officer in the Prince William County Circuit Court, where he continued to supervise high-risk felons in the community, prepare violation reports for the circuit court judges, prepare pre-sSentence Investigation reports and regularly testify in court. In 2005, Rob was assigned to the gang unit in the Department of Corrections, attached to the Prince William County Police Department’s Gang Unit.

In this position, he also assisted with the development of policy and procedures on supervising gang members, for the Virginia Department of Corrections, both inside the prisons and in the community, along with being assigned as the department’s primary representative for the Washington/Baltimore High Intensity Drug Trafficking Areas (HIDTA) Gang Management Program. He also served as a Defensive Tactics Instructor and Adjunct Academy Instructor, teaching Use of Force and Gang Identification and Supervision. Rob obtained a leadership position, serving as Deputy Chief Probation and Parole Officer for four years, prior to vacating his position with the department in December 2013.

Rob is currently a law enforcement education coordinator with American Military University where he works with correctional leadership and gang investigator organizations across the country. He is a contributing writer for AMU’s blog site, InPublicSafety.com and works, part-time, as a Traffic Anchor/Reporter for the 24 hour, all-news radio station, WTOP-FM, which was recently awarded as the National Association of Broadcasters, Major Market Radio Station of the Year, for its role in exemplifying commitment to the community and excellence in broadcasting.

He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Criminal Justice, from Shippensburg University of Pennsylvania, and a Master of Arts degree in Journalism and Public Affairs from the American University, in Washington, D.C. He is currently pursuing a Master of Arts degree in Intelligence Studies from American Military University.

Anthony S. Mangeri has over 30 years of experience in Crisis Management and emergency operations. Currently, Mangeri serves as the Director of Fire and Emergency Services Outreach at American Public University System and is Faculty in the School of Security and Global Studies. He offers extensive experience in emergency and disaster management to include, disaster response and recovery operations, hazard identification and threat reduction, emergency planning, and incident management systems.

Mangeri started his career as an investigator for the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. For much of his career, he served in government leadership managing disaster preparedness, response and recovery initiatives. He has served during many large-scale disasters including the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, numerous hurricanes, and severe weather events.

In addition, Mangeri served his community as a volunteer firefighter and Emergency Medical Technician for more than 25 years where he earned the rank of Assistant Chief-Safety Officer, serving as the fire department’s health and safety officer for many years.
Mr. Mangeri serves on several professional committees such as the ASIS Fire and Life –Safety Council, The DomPrep 40, and IAEM Scholarship Commission. He is currently Region 2 Vice President of the International Association of Emergency Managers.

Anthony has an earned a Master of Public Administration from Rutgers University. He is a Certified Emergency Manager and Certified Public Manager. He has completed a Fellowship in Public Health Leadership Initiative for Emergency Response sponsored by the Center for Public Health
