INDIANA, Pa. — Family, friends and co-workers of the late Michael Lloyd came together May 9 to honor his legacy as a corrections officer at the Indiana County Jail.
“He was just a helper,” his sister Vikki Bennett said.
The Northern Cambria native had the prison’s Community Emergency Response Team room named after him and it was announced that the Michael Lloyd Scholarship was established in his memory by United Mine Workers of America Locals 4702 and 2193.
The scholarship is geared toward ensuring Lloyd’s “commitment to service and community continues to inspire future generations.”
Lloyd died Nov. 19, 2021, at the age of 44.
He was a proud member of the CERT group and was a passionate corrections officer.
During the ceremony, jail Security Capt. and CERT Commander Brett Millard dedicated the response room in Lloyd’s honor.
“From this day forward, it will serve as a lasting tribute to Officer Lloyd’s service, courage and the example he set,” the post said.
Bennett said she’s sure her brother would have been rolling his eyes at all of the attention.
She noted that Lloyd didn’t want to be praised, but rather serve others.
Knowing their family member was honored this way was a prideful moment, Bennett said, adding it was especially meaningful for their mother, Catherine Pastirko .
Other aspects of the ceremony included the Rev. Douglas McCully officiating the service.
He was formerly the CERT commander and security captain at the prison.
