Quick training: Ethical violations

Editor’s note: This series of articles is intended to be used as quick topic discussions at the beginning of any meeting. They are meant to create discussion among your teams and to get your officers thinking on their feet about training topics, in order to encourage learning and training.

What counts as an ethical violation?

Harassment
Fraternizing with detainees this includes anything sexual or having that appearance
Covering up deputy violations
Derogatory comments about deputies and/or detainees
Sleeping on the job
Falsifying paperwork
Giving individual detainees special or preferential treatment

Why you should report the ethical violations of other deputies:

You are being put in danger by the other deputy
If you do nothing, you become part of the violation
It is your duty to intervene for that deputy to stop them; that is what brothers do
You should try first to deal with the individual when possible
Repetitive or severe violations must be dealt with by the supervisor

Do not lie; there are no new ways to screw up in law enforcement. Admit your mistakes. Learn. Move forward in your development.
