CHARLOTTE COUNTY, Fla. — Two of the 10 corrections officers who were fired after being accused of beating and killing an inmate have regained their jobs at the Charlotte County prison.

NBC news reports that Matthew Walker was beaten to death inside his cell, his death certificate detailing blows to the body that caused his death during a fight with corrections officers on April 11, 2014.

The certificate specifically said that Walker died from asphyxia and blunt force trauma to the head, neck and torso.

All but one of the officers is trying to get their jobs back.

Teamsters Union Spokesman Bill Curtis contends that the dismissals were political.

“The state had no case to fire these employees and they show that right now,” he said. “These dismissals were done in mass by the Department of Corrections.”

The officers fired were part of the 32 cut statewide in an attempt to root out bad corrections officers.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement said that they have submitted their investigation of Walker’s death to the State’s Attorney Office, who will decide whether or not charges will be filed.
