BAKERSVILLE, N.C. — North Carolina has reopened a criminal investigation into the deadly Mitchell County jail fire following new evidence a prisoner might have set the blaze.

The 2002 fire killed eight inmates left trapped in their cells. New statements made during depositions in a civil trial accuse a surviving prisoner of setting the fire to aid an escape.
Family members of victims said they welcomed the move by the State Bureau of Investigation.
