KENNEWICK, Wash. — A Tri-City man will serve 1 1/2 years in prison for breaking the nose of a corrections officer during an attack inside the Benton County jail.
Lyle Dylan Amos, 19, pleaded guilty earlier this month in Benton County Superior Court to second-degree assault.
The charge included the aggravating circumstance that the victim is a law enforcement officer who suffered severe injuries.
This week, Judge Cameron Mitchell ordered an exceptional sentence of four additional months. It was recommended by Deputy Prosecutor Anita Petra and agreed to by Amos and his attorney, Ryan Swinburnson.
The standard range for assault, with Amos’ criminal history, is one year to one year and two months in prison.
According to a report from the sheriff’s office and court documents, Corrections Officer Robert Mancillas was in one of the inmate units, sitting at a work station, when he was hit without warning on Nov. 29.
Mancillas — a 16-year veteran of the county’s corrections division — fell to the ground as Amos continued to hit him several times in the face and head. Amos eventually was restrained by other jail staff.
Mancillas has returned to work, but reportedly is dealing with anxiety issues.
Amos also uses the name Dylan Ray Amos.
He has been in the Kennewick facility since Nov. 7. At the time of the attack, he was in custody for a gross misdemeanor theft charge, as well as for misdemeanor resisting arrest and criminal trespassing.
His criminal history includes convictions for felony harassment, first-degree trafficking in stolen property, third-degree assault and two cases of residential burglary.
He was told he is to stay away from Mancillas for five years.
