FRESNO, Calif. — A Fresno County correctional officer suffered a broken nose and bruises when he was assaulted by a prisoner Thursday evening in the county’s main jail.

Capt. Rick Hill said the officer, 43 years old and a nine-year veteran of the sheriff’s office, will go off duty while he recovers.

The prisoner, Alfredo Ramirez, 32, was in custody for illegally entering the United States and is considered a maximum security inmate. Ramirez has been in the jail since Jan. 11 and has prior convictions for vehicle theft, burglary, narcotics charges and resisting arrest, Hill said.
