Cells don’t lock in new Calif. jail

SAUSALITO, Calif. — A new police building going up in Sausalito had something missing from the original drawings: a properly designed place to put the bad guys.

Now, the city must spend another $150,000 and make significant changes to the project at Johnson and Caledonia streets to get it right.

The original design “did not allow for the locking up of individuals in holding cells,” according to a city staff report on the project. “The police department stated that the ability to lock up potentially dangerous individuals is an essential requirement of their operational mission.”

It turns out the architect who designed the building did not have the latest standards required by the Corrections Standards Authority when the plans were drawn, city officials said. Although there was a holding cell designed, it did not have the required thick concrete, steel and heavy lockable doors or proper fire protection inside the cell.
