COLUMBUS, Ohio — A Central Ohio Youth center corrections officer with a history of disciplinary issues was fired after using excessive force against a juvenile inmate.
The Columbus Dispatch reports that Jerrod Kerr used physical force last month without first making reasonable efforts to talk with the inmate, according to a report.
The altercation took place on Jan. 19, starting when Kerr knocked bedding out of the inmate’s hands as he was taking it to his room.
Kerr then attempted to escort the inmate to his room, and a struggle ensued. Kerr threw the inmate to the ground, handcuffed him and then tried to secure him in his room.
The report states that the boy wasn’t harming anyone, damaging property or trying to escape. He was treated for injuries at a nearby hospital.
Kerr was fined for another case of excessive force three years prior, and his disciplinary record lists 34 other actions taken against him since 2007.
