SCRANTON — A former Lackawanna County Prison guard convicted of mistreating five female inmates has requested shorter jail time.

Through a motion filed by his attorney, Joseph Black decried a 45-month to eight-year prison sentence, arguing the sentence is too harsh for the crimes.

Mr. Black pleaded guilty this month to misdemeanor counts of unlawful restraint, indecent exposure and official oppression avoiding felony rape charges.

Calling the sentence “illegal,” Mr. Black’s attorney asked Judge Michael Barrasse to recalculate the sentence, which he said was five times higher than the standard range.
