TRENTON, N.J. — An off-duty New Jersey corrections officer was shot and killed while attending an event at a Trenton banquet hall.
Carl Batie, a 26-year-old Willingboro resident who served in Mercer County, was one of several people standing on a second-story rear desk when shots rang out around 1:15 a.m. Sunday. He was pronounced dead a short time later.
Authorities tell The Times of Trenton that it appears a single shooter was involved, but further details and a possible motive were not disclosed. No other injuries were reported in the shooting, and authorities were trying to determine if the assailant may have targeted Batie.
