County ordered to pay $12,000 to officer for late paycheck

State law says all employees must be paid within 72 hours of leaving

BRENTWOOD, N.H. — A southeast New Hampshire county has been ordered to pay a retired corrections officer more than $12,000 because his last paycheck was issued three days late.

The Portsmouth Herald reports County Commissioner Kevin Coyle says the state Department of Labor is sending a warning to both public and private employers by ordering Rockingham County to pay Harold “Butch” Whitehouse the punitive award.

Coyle says Whitehouse was owed about $24,000 and was paid on the next pay day.

But state law says all employees must be paid within 72 hours of leaving, if they give at least one pay period of notice.

County Commissioner Kevin St. James says the county does not plan to appeal.
