SAVANNAH, Georgia — One of nine Georgia sheriff’s workers who was fired after a man was found dead in a restraining chair at the county jail has been reinstated.
Chatham County Chief Deputy Sheriff Roy Harris told the Savannah Morning News Thursday that 23-year-old Pvt. Andrew Evans-Martinez will be put on 12 months of probation and undergo additional training.
Authorities have said 21-year-old Mathew Ajibade was found dead in an isolation cell after fighting jailers during booking Jan. 1. A coroner said Ajibade’s cause of death was homicide by blunt force trauma.
Harris says a review showed that Evans-Martinez wasn’t inside the cell where Ajibade was restrained and didn’t see what happened before he died.
Two jail employees and a contract health care worker have been indicted in the man’s death.
