BELFAST, Maine — An inmate is making his escape from the Maine Coastal Regional Re-entry Center left behind a note for staff and family.

NBC News reports that Tyler Malmstrom apologized for the escape, explaining that it was “something he had to do.” He wrote that he knew people at the facility were trying to help him, but apparently the escape was more important.

Malmstrom was serving a sentence following a conviction for aggravated assault. He was transferred to the re-entry center from the nearby Knox County jail to serve out the last five months of his sentence.
