HUNTSVILLE, Ala. — The FBI is examining how a prisoner was injured inside the Madison County jail.

Al.com reports 28-year-old Haraesheo Rice was injured in a confrontation with officers inside the Huntsville facility. FBI spokesman Paul Daymond said federal officials are examining the incident.

Chief Sheriff’s Deputy David Jernigan said Monday the department has launched an internal investigation. Jernigan said detention officers removed Rice from a cell on Aug. 11.

Jernigan said Rice was injured during a second cell extraction on Aug. 12 and sent to Huntsville Hospital. Jernigan said he could not discuss details about the case or Rice’s medical condition.

Rice’s mother, Terry, said her son is mentally ill.

Madison County Commissioner Bob Harrison has asked to view surveillance video showing the incident.
