LINCOLN, Neb. — Flags will be flown at half staff today in observance of Peace Officers Memorial Day, notes a reminder from Governor Dave Heineman.
According to KOTA News, President Obama signed a proclamation ordering flags to be flown at half-staff nationwide.
A federal law signed in 1994 encourages the lowering of the American flag every May 15 in remembrance of the thousands of law enforcement officers throughout the nation who have sacrificed their lives in the line of duty.
In Nebraska, 137 officers have given their lives since 1866.
