CANTON — Former corrections officer Douglas Matthews wiped tears from his eyes as he was sentenced to 10 and a half years behind bars for running his own family off the road.
NY TV reports that Matthews pleaded guilty to reduced charges of felony second degree assault in a plea deal with prosecutors.
He had been indicted originally on four counts of attempted murder.
Matthews told the court he planned to use his prison time “to become a better person and to help heal scars that may never be forgotten.
“I apologize to all those I have harmed and ask for their forgiveness.”
He intentionally rammed a car carrying his wife, mother-in-law and two young sons, forcing the vehicle off the road in October 2013.
The car overturned, with Matthews’ vehicle coming to rest on top of it.
