DAYTON, Ohio — A juvenile detention center was evacuated after a gas leak was discovered on Wednesday.

The Dayton Daily News reports that 28 juveniles housed in the Clark County Juvenile Center were moved while heat was turned off so that the leak could be repaired.

Thirteen of the offenders were moved to the Clark County Jail temporarily, while the rest were returned home with ankle monitors.

This is the first time such an evacuation has happened at the juvenile center in 20 years, according to Clark County Juvenile Court Judge Joseph Monnin.

The county jail worked with the juvenile center, making room for the youths. They were kept segregated from adult inmates.

“When you have to evacuate a correctional facility, that is a situation that is an emergency and this is how county government works together,” said Clark County Sheriff Gene Kelly.

County crews worked through the day Wednesday to repair the line, and heat was restored around 4 p.m.
