MIAMI, Fla. — The girlfriend of a Florida corrections officer is speaking while he continues to fight for his life.

In an interview with Local 10, Bernice Velez-Martinez described the event as a nightmare.

“This isn’t something I do not or would not wish on my worst enemy,” she said of finding Juan Guellmes on the ground outside their home, shot.

She and her son heard the first two shots and rushed outside to find out what had happened to the 51-year-old who was just outside washing his car.

“He’s on the floor, he’s bleeding, he’s asking us to call 911,” Velez-Martinez said. “All of a sudden I lift up my vision and I see this armed individual, pointing a gun at us.”

The thief had just ambushed Guellmes, shooting him three times in the arm, shoulder and stomach before taking a gold chain from around his neck.

“There was nothing we could do at that moment, because we were fearing for our own lives,” Velez-Martinez said.

Instead, the thief fled, leaving Guellmes’ family hoping that he will pull through.

“I’m very angry,” Velez-Martinez added. “This person needs to – he needs to be in jail.”

Guellmes is still considered to be in life-threatening condition, but it is believed he could pull through.
