GETTYSBURG — A man who appeared armed outside the Adams County Jail was swiftly dealt with by law enforcement, but the incident remains under investigation.

PennLive reports that a man showed up Thursday afternoon outside the jail armed with a gun. Some reports say that he fired shots, though this is unconfirmed.

During a press conference, Pennsylvania State Police spokesman Trooper Robert Hicks said that law enforcement responded to a call that a gunman was outside the jail. One shot was fired, striking the gunman. He is currently hospitalized and his condition is unknown.

The jail was placed on lockdown during the incident and all roads around the prison were closed.

Once the scene was cleared, the roads were reopened, but it’s unclear if the jail is no longer locked down.

“It’s a little bit of a shock,” Adams County Sheriff James Muller said. But he was glad police responded quickly. “When word goes out, they respond from everywhere in the county.”

“It was handled properly, it was handled expediently, and the situation was put under control pretty quick.”
