WHITE TOWNSHIP, Ind. — An inmate at State Correctional Institution Pine Grove in White Township is suspected of strangling his cellmate during an altercation about 2:35 a.m. Sunday in their cell, authorities reported.
The victim, Jayson Stewart, was discovered injured by correction officers about 3 a.m. and was rushed by Citizens’ Ambulance Service paramedics to Indiana Regional Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at 4:20 a.m., according to Indiana County Coroner Michael Baker.
An autopsy performed at Memorial Medical Center, Johnstown, showed Stewart, 29, died of asphyxia due to manual strangulation, Baker reported. The autopsy also showed Stewart suffered some cuts and minor blunt-force injuries to his head, and Baker ruled the death a homicide.
