Inmate gives false information in search for missing teen

Robert Wolford told authorities where to find the missing girl’s body

CLEVELAND — The Fox 8 I-Team has uncovered new developments in the case of a prison inmate, who sparked an exhaustive search earlier this year for missing Cleveland teenager Amanda Berry. It was on July 19 that Cleveland Police and the FBI began digging up a vacant lot at West 30th Street and Wade Avenue, in a search for the remains of Berry, who vanished without a trace in 2003.

The search was prompted by a letter sent to Cuyahoga County Prosecutor Bill Mason by 25-year-old Robert Wolford, an inmate at Lucasville, who had been convicted in 2007 of killing a man in the very same lot.

Assistant prosecutor Colleen Reali told the I-Team, “He indicated that he wanted to get something off his chest and that he had something to do with the murder of Amanda Berry. Subsequent to that, we started an investigation, we went down and interviewed him where he’s currently incarcerated. He had a great deal of detail regarding the murder and because of that detail, we took further steps to investigate his claims.”

But after two days of digging, and finding no sign of Amanda Berry’s remains, authorities confronted Robert Wolford, who admitted that he made up the entire story.
