NEW YORK — The inmate who spoke publicly about aiding a female correctional officer from a sexual assault was beaten by a group of prisoners for failing to give them proper credit.
The NY Daily News reports that Franklin Johnson was beaten Thursday after inmates saw a TV report about his rescue based on another Daily News story.
The inmates were also upset that correctional officers had taken up a collection to add money into Johnson’s commissary account as a way of thanks. Johnson was moved to his own private cell in the same facility on Thursday after suffering a minor knee injury during the attack.
Johnson is jailed on a drug-related charge and has no funds for commissary, which lead to jail staff to taking up a collection to help him out.
The female officer who was attacked late last month has been reassigned to another unit.
Other inmates who played a key role in the officer’s rescue are Avnaldo Trinidad, Michael Deleon, Tykel Johnson and Omar Cumberland.
It’s unclear if they took part in Johnson’s beating.
