REFUGIO COUNTY, Texas — A correctional officer with the Refugio County Jail has been terminated after taking an inmate out of the jail to help run errands and to lunch.

The Victoria Advocate reports that George Hernandez was let go under at-will employment according to the Refugio County Sheriff, Robert Bolcik.

It’s unclear if the termination was due to taking John Ray Bustos, a known member of the Mexican Mafia, out of the facility in jailer clothing and without handcuffs or shackles.

Bustos is serving seven years for a gang-related beating that left a man brain dead.

Refugio County Judge Robert Blaschke confirmed that the inmate was taken out of the jail to run errands and was treated to a sit-down lunch at an unnamed restaurant.

Bustos is considered a trustee, and it’s not uncommon for a trustee to wear street clothing while at work assignments. He did not comment on the possibility that the inmate was wearing a jailer’s uniform.
