ALFRED, Maine — With lawmakers in Maine set to revisit the issue of whether the state’s county jails should be consolidated, a sheriff is offering tours of his jail to illustrate how efficiently it runs independently.
York County Sheriff Bill King opened the York County Jail to tours to help show that the jails are best run by each county and sheriff.
WCSH6 reports that Representatives Karen Gerrish and Bob Foley toured the York County Jail Saturday.
Consolidation of the state’s 16 county jails began in 2008. Since then, lawmakers, county sheriffs and Governor LePage have questioned whether it is the best system for the state.
The legislature’s Criminal Justice Committee will be taking up the matter this week.
