BEDFORD, Iowa — An escaped felon chose the wrong home to break into after he was shot dead by a retired corrections officer.
Rodney Eugene Long, who had escaped from the Clarinda Correction Facility Friday morning and allegedly shot a deputy Sunday night, broke into the home of Jerome and Carolyn Mauderly, according to the Des Moines Register.
Long was armed with a semi-automatic handgun and held the couple in their bedroom while he used their phone. Authorities did not elaborate, but somehow Jerome managed to get his shot gun and shot Long.
Jerome Mauderly, 71, is a retired corrections officer who worked in Maryville, Mo.
“He’s a great guy and I feel sorry for him because I think it would be very difficult,” Rosayln Cummings, 62, a lifelong friend of the couple, told the Register. She described Jerome Mauderly as a “very nice man, very quite and calm.”
