SACRAMENTO, Calif. — The creator of Facebook is fully behind prison reform after having toured California’s San Quentin State Prison this past week.

Mark Zuckerberg wrote in a Facebook post that “our current system isn’t working,” according to TIME.

He and his wife visited San Quentin after Zuckerberg “[wanting] to see first hand what prison conditions are like for people.”

Zuckerberg also attended a coding class for inmates.

“I was impressed by their spirit to return to their communities and provide for their families,” he said of the students, “as well as the dedication of the staff to help them reclaim their lives.”

Zuckerberg’s interest in the topic rose after he finished a book on mass incarceration and the disproportionate racial impacts of the system.

He didn’t offer any policy suggestions, but did say he was going to “keep learning about this topic.”
