CHARLES COUNTY, Md. — A corrections officer with the Charles County Detention Center’s Custody and Security Division decided to do something special when it came to fundraising money for cancer research.

SM News Net reports that Cpl. Matthew Kline recently completed ‘The Ride to Conquer Cancer’ event, a two day, 150 mile bicycling journey through Maryland, Virginia, and D.C.

He participated in the event to honor his mother, Judith Kline, after she was diagnosed with Stage 3 breast cancer in 2013. Mrs. Kline was able to watch her son as he raised money due to her successful medical treatment.

Cpl. Kline said the ride was tough, but no more difficult than the battles his mother has faced over the year.

“I am thankful my mom is still here and that her treatments are going well. I’m also thankful for everyone who supported my attempt at this ride. I just wanted to contribute in some small way to cancer research.”
