BALTIMORE, Md. — Before 11 a.m. Monday, a man arrested in connection with loitering in Northwest Baltimore was brought into the Central Booking and Intake Center, when he slipped out of custody and was shot in the leg by a corrections officer guarding the back gate.

The man, Baltimore police and jail officials said, continued to flee and climbed over the 14-foot chain-link gate topped by strands of barbed wire. He then leaped over a steep embankment and ran into an enclosed parking lot several feet below Fallsway and East Eager Street before Baltimore police caught him.

It was the first time a shooting was reported at Central Booking, which opened in 1995 and is considered one of the busiest booking facilities in the United States, processing 68,000 inmates last year, Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services spokesman Mark A. Vernarelli said. He said the corrections officer followed protocol and was allowed to use deadly force to prevent an escape.
