TRENTON — On a cold, snow-covered early morning in February 2011, a state corrections officer shot and killed one man and injured another after being jumped outside the city’s Candlelight Lounge on Passaic Street.

Sgt. John L. Jenkins, who was a 15-year corrections veteran, fired numerous shots into one of his alleged attackers, killing local boxer Mark R. Ford, 40, and struck an alleged second assaulter, Preston Wimbush, in the wrist with a bullet. At the time, police said Wimbush and Ford hassled the corrections officer before they were kicked out of the bar and the verbal exchange escalated into a physical altercation after Jenkins was struck in the head with a bottle.

As Jenkins was being hit in the face and body by several attackers, he defended himself by pulling out his gun and shooting, police said. After the dust had settled, three men, including the then 40-year-old Wimbush, were charged with assaulting Jenkins. But a lawsuit recently filed by city resident Wimbush is shining a new light on the Feb. 4, 2011 shooting.
