ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — A second death threat by a New Mexico inmate toward pop star Justin Bieber has prompted the Department of Corrections to admit that they have not been monitoring the inmate’s mailbox closely enough.
Dana Martin was recorded on prison telephone in 2012 telling two hit men to castrate and strangle Bieber. More recently, Martin mailed Action 7 news reporter Laura Thoren an image of Bieber with a shooting target in the center of his face, an image the DOC says Thoren never should have received.
After the phone call was discovered, Martin was immediately placed in solitary confinement with all phone privileges revoked. They said all mail would be reviewed and monitored before being sent.
So what happened? Martin was recently moved to a new prison, where he likely took advantage of the opportunity to mail out the photo since the facility was unaware that the inmate’s mail was to be monitored.
The image is currently under investigation. There was no word on what sort of discipline Martin would receive.
Martin is currently serving two life sentences for the 2000 killing of a 15-year-old girl.
