COLUMBUS, Ohio — A central Ohio jail is ditching frozen for fresh.
The Columbus Dispatch reports the Franklin County sheriff’s office is buying equipment to cut whole potatoes and plans to stop serving frozen french fries to inmates at the county jail.
Correction officials approved spending roughly $20,000 on two fry cutters for the prison at a meeting this past week.
Fries are served at two jail facilities three times a week. Each time, 23 bags of frozen fries are needed to feed the inmates, costing about $395 per meal.
Serving freshly-cut potatoes would lower the per-meal cost to approximately $154.
Sheriff Zach Scott’s office estimates the county will save more than $37,000 a year by serving the fresh-cut fries.
