Okla. detention officer admits to stealing inmate’s medication

Claimed he had back problems that he hoped the medication would help

DUNCAN, Okla. – A Stephens County Detention Center officer was fired after he admitted to stealing an inmate’s medication.

KFOR reports that Mitchell Lewis was caught on surveillance video tampering with a hydrocodone prescription pill bottle intended for an inmate. Officials discovered the theft after the medication came up missing after being processed.

When confronted, Lewis became nervous and immediately admitted to taking them.

He claimed to have thrown the pills away after investigators became suspicious. He said he had stolen the pills due to back pain and was hoping the medication would help him.

Sheriff Wayne McKinney said Lewis had been employed at the sheriff’s office for under a year, and had never been in trouble with the law before.

Lewis was arrested for theft of a controlled substance and has since bonded out of jail.
