Pa. jail tracks homeless offenders to reduce recidivism

Facility is making an effort to educate inmates on resources they can use once they are released

BELLEFONTE, Pa. — The Centre County Jail is keeping statistics on its inmate population to determine the number of homeless and frequent fliers in an effort to keep offenders from coming back.

WJAC TV reports that the facility is making an effort to educate inmates on resources they can use once they are released. On top of that, the jail is planning a “re-entry coalition” in order to improve lives, reduce recidivism and increase public safety.

Only 61 of the nearly 1,830 inmates housed last year claimed to be homeless or transient, and officials believe the numbers are holding steady, though they don’t have statistics for previous years for comparison.

The “re-entry coalition” is still in the planning stages and no inmates have participated in it yet, though the jail hopes to have it up and running before the end of the year.
