At a glance: The state’s largest public safety entities, the Department of Corrections and State Police, would get a financial bump in 2015-2016 with a total allocation of $2.5 billion under the governor’s budget proposal. That’s an increase of about $166 million over last year.
What it means: Much of the increases in the Department of Corrections’ budget would cover continued programs and costs -- like prison operations, medical care and inmate education and training. The budget does provide $10.1 million for new initiatives, such as providing enhanced treatment for inmates with serious mental illness.
