LANSING, Mich. – One of the country’s largest private prison operators is currently seeking legislation that will allow them to house out-of-state Level V inmates in a Michigan prison.

MLive.com reports that the Geo Group wants the ability to move the high-security inmates into a shuttered facility near Baldwin.

Current law only allows the prison to hold Level I-IV inmates.

The facility previously served as the Michigan Youth Correctional Facility.

Negotiations ask to allow around 600 prisoners to be housed in the facility. The facility can hold up to 1,784 inmates.
