ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. — An Orange County corrections sergeant who got his job back after being videotaped fighting on a bus will be reimbursed for the time he wasn’t working by taxpayers.
WFTV reports that both the sergeant and the lieutenant he was fighting with were both rehired in March. The jail has been ordered to give the sergeant back pay.
An arbitrator ruled the sergeant’s punishment was too harsh and ordered a three-day suspension instead of termination.
Following the fight on the bus, where Lt. Michael Dean takes a punch at Sgt. Donald Casey, Casey went to his car to retrieve a firearm. He then confronted Dean in the parking lot with the gun in his waistband, saying he feared for his safety.
The same arbirtrator ruled that it was Dean who instigated the fight, over his girlfriend, who is also a corrections officer at the same facility.
Casey returns to the facility at the same rank and pay. His back pay is expected to be around $47,000. Casey is also allegedly working on a racial discrimination lawsuit.
