Some top-paid Mich. county workers are corrections officers

County commissioner says numbers give her a “stomachache,” calls for audit

WAYNE COUNTY, Mich. — Besides doctors, the highest-paid Wayne County employees are corrections officers.

According to Deadline Detroit, a new investigation shows that the officers are doubling and tripling their salaries through overtime.

Just last year, 112 of the county’s 380 corporals made more than $100,000 each, and forty of them made more than the sheriff himself.

The single highest-paid county employee was a Wayne County sheriff’s corporal who made $182,475, including $128,580 in overtime pay.

“This just gives me a stomachache,” said Wayne County Commissioner Laura Cox. “For a jail guard to make $180,000 is just ridiculous. Obviously, an audit is in order.”
