State: Parents released early from prison less likely to reoffend

Program allows parent inmates to spend the last year of their sentence outside of jail

OLYMPIA, Wash. — Inmates in Washington are being offered a program where they can spend the last year of their sentence outside of prison. The catch? They have to be a parent.

Near-300 inmates are currently participating in the Community Parting Alternative, which requires them to check in with a community corrections officer and pass routine drug tests, according to King5. They also wear ankle bracelets.

Make one mistake and it’s back to prison, no excuses.

The program started three years ago and is only offered to parents who aren’t serving time for violent or sexual crimes. In order to be eligible for participation, they must have only a year left on their sentences.
