PENDLETON, Ind. — Indiana State Police are investigating the death of an inmate hours after he barricaded himself inside his cell at a central Indiana facility.

Pendleton Correctional Facility Superintendent Dushan Zatecky says 32-year-old Justin Addler of Crawfordsville died at St. Vincent’s Anderson Regional Hospital about 4:15 p.m. Monday.

A news release from the prison says Addler barricaded himself in his cell, brandished a weapon and refused orders to surrender about 1:15 p.m. Monday. The release says he surrendered after a cell extraction team was assembled. After receiving some medical treatment at the prison’s health care center, he was moved to the hospital observation cell.

The release says Addler was found later found to be unresponsive and staff began trying to revive him while awaiting an ambulance. He died at the hospital.
