Tasers used to break up prison yard fight

No officers were injured during the incident

MUSKEGON, Mi. — Correctional officers had to use TASERs to break up a fight between a half-dozen inmates in a prison’s medium-security yard.

According to Mlive.com, the incident at Earnest C. Brooks Correctional Facility stemmed from thefts between inmates and caused minor injuries among the six who were fighting.

No officers were injured in the incident, which led to a two-hour long lockdown of the yard and one housing unit.

During the lockdown, officers conducted a search that lead to the discovery of weapons in the prison yard and some of the cells.

The prisoners involved will be disciplined and their cases reviewed for possible criminal charges, according to Nancy Hooks, administrative assistant to the warden.

Those involved were Level 2; Brooks also houses Level 4, but none were involved.

The Michigan Corrections Organization union commended the quick actions of officers and supervisors. The union has complained for years that the corrections department has reclassified allegedly dangerous inmates to lower security levels in order to save money.

Department officials say the classifications are appropriate.
