OMAHA, Neb. — Amid an investigation into how scores of Nebraska prisoners got out early after their sentences were miscalculated, two prison lawyers have chosen to retire rather than be fired.
Nebraska Radio Network reports that State Corrections Director Mike Kenney announced his disciplinary action against those responsible for miscalculating prison sentences for nearly 600 inmates.
“In response to the sentencing miscalculations, disciplinary hearings have been held for four employees,” he stated. “The General Counsel George Green and Associate Legal Counsel Sharon Lindgren chose to retire, pending discipline.
“My decision in both of these cases would have been termination.”
Two others, Records Administrator Kyle Poppert and Associate Legal Counsel Kathy Blum, have been suspended without pay.
All being disciplined are accused of failing to heed two state Supreme Court rulings on prison sentencing, leading to the miscalculations.
Governor Dave Heineman considers Green and Lindgren to be the most accountable for the miscalculations, but the investigation continues.
