MONTERREY, Mexico — Surveillance video captured a deadly prison riot that left 49 inmates dead and 11 others injured.

Fox News Latino reported that fight was between rival factions of the Los Zetas drug cartels.

Governor Jaime Rodriguez told Al Jazeera that the Feb. 12 violence started in two areas of Topo Chico prison.

“During the clash several prisoners set fire to the food storage and sleeping areas,” Rodriguez said.

The rivalry was between gangs led by Jorge Ivan Hernández Cantú and Juan Pedro Saldívar Farías, The New York Times reported. The two leaders were serving time for organized crime activities and were not hurt in the riot.

Federal police and military surrounded the prison during the riot and were able to end it after a couple of hours.

The prison only has 100 correctional officers for 3,800 inmates.
