Vt. correctional officer cited for having guns on prison property

K-9 units were inspecting the facility for potential drug contraband when they alerted police to Maxwell J. Field’s vehicle

ST. JOHNSBURY, Vt. — A correctional officer was cited after police found two guns in his car, which was parked outside the Northeast Regional Correctional Facility.

The Burlington Free Press reports that K-9 units were inspecting the facility for potential drug contraband when they alerted police to Maxwell J. Field’s vehicle.

Police found a small amount of marijuana in addition to the two firearms. The types of guns were not identified.

Vermont law prohibits the presence of dangerous or deadly weapons inside state institutions or on their grounds without approval of the institution’s warden or superintendent.

Field could face up to two years in prison, a $200 fine or both.

The infraction will be referred to Vermont’s Agency of Human Services Investigation Unit. The internal investigation will be separate from the criminal process.
