OSHKOSH — The Wisconsin Correctional system has experienced a rise in job vacancies for prison correctional officers and sergeants over the past five years.

The job openings leave the correctional staff still on the job to work double shifts to cover the vacancies under what they call very stressful conditions. And several correctional sergeants tell FOX 11 Investigates the growing shortage is creating a danger.

“It would be much safer for staff, the inmates and the community if all the positions were filled,” said Paul Oosterhouse, a correctional sergeant at Taycheedah Correctional Institution in Fond du Lac.
