RALEIGH, N.C. — State prison officials have asked the Halifax County Sheriff’s Office to look into the death late Wednesday of an inmate who may have been using a synthetic form of marijuana, they said Thursday.
Charles I. Moss, 38, serving a sentence for second-degree murder, was found unresponsive in his cell at the Caledonia Correctional Institution in Tillery just before midnight Wednesday, the Department of Public Safety said.
Guards used CPR in an effort to revive Moss, but Halifax County EMS workers pronounced him dead about 1 a.m. Thursday, department spokeswoman Pam Walker said in a statement.
Walker said indications that Moss may have been using K2, a kind of synthetic marijuana, led officials to ask for the outside investigation. Officials also notified the State Bureau of Investigation about the death, Walker said.
An internal investigation was begun, too, Walker said.
Moss was convicted in April 2002 of second-degree murder in a killing in Lincoln County in November 2001. He had been expected to be released in December 2024, state prison records showed.
Moss had earlier convictions for breaking and entering and larceny.
