FOLSOM, Calif. — The arrest of James “Whitey” Bulger, one of the FBI’s 10 most wanted, has drawn renewed interest in the other criminals on the list, one of whom has a famous Folsom connection.
Glen Stewart Godwin was put on the FBI’s most wanted list in 1996, almost a decade after an elaborate escape from Folsom Prison.
In 1987 Godwin was brought to Folsom Prison, then a maximum security prison, because he was an escape risk.
But in June of that same year he was able to get a hacksaw, cut a hole in a fence, climb into a storm drain and crawl 750 feet to the American River where a raft was waiting. He escaped and fled to Mexico.
The FBI tells KCRA they still get tips on his whereabouts, and continue to follow them up.
“Oh yeah,” said Special Agent Mike Rayfield, who worked on the case for seven years in the 1990s. “We still get tips. We’re working a couple of tips as we speak.”
Rayfield believes Godwin is likely still in Mexico or somewhere in South America.
